A new study has found that some beauty products are on sale at less than what they’re supposed to be.
The research found that while some products can be bought at a discount at beauty supply retailers, many are actually too expensive for the average person to purchase.
The study by independent consultancy firm Skin Care Production, which has a track record of conducting research on cosmetics, found that many products were not sold at their full retail price.
The most popular cosmetics brands are Cosmetics Australia, Glamour, COSMAC and Dr. Bronner’s, and the average consumer is unlikely to have access to these brands.
“A lot of people think they can just go and buy them online or at the local drug store and then they’ll get it at a reasonable price,” Dr. Tony Pang told ABC News.
“But the reality is that the bulk of cosmetic products are not sold for their true retail price and are very expensive.”
Dr. Pang also said that the higher prices for some cosmetics products were likely due to the “diversification of brands and their supply chains” in the beauty industry.
“It’s just one of those things where people just buy whatever they want, no matter what,” he said.
“I think there are many, many more brands out there that aren’t as well known and people have the right to buy them at what they want.”
Beauty products can cost more than what’s listed in retailers Advertisement While Dr. Oz has made the announcement to remove products that cost more, Dr. Anthony Fauci, a dermatologist at Sydney’s Alfred Hospital, said the “overpricing” is a problem for consumers.
“The cosmetics industry is an incredibly complex and competitive industry,” he told ABC TV.
“People who are buying the cheapest are the ones who are not paying attention to what’s in the other products.”
He said some products may be less expensive than advertised because retailers are limiting supply and are not selling at the full retail cost.
Dr. Fauct said it’s not clear whether this was due to a shortage of product, but there may be other factors at play.
“There’s a lot of different things going on,” he explained.
“In my experience, when I go to retailers and I see the prices that they’re selling the products for, it’s probably because they’re not going to carry the full range of products.”
Dr Fauction also said many products may actually cost more because of “divergent distribution” between retailers.
“When you’re buying from a retailer, you can actually find some of these products on their website but they don’t have the full product range and you’re only buying what’s advertised in their store,” he noted.
“So there’s a huge price difference between a product you can find at the pharmacy and what’s actually on sale.”

The spokesperson said the Cosmetics Council has recommended that retailers “expose their products to a wide range of consumer concerns and engage with the Australian consumer to help them understand what is appropriate for their customer base”.
They said Cosmetics has a “zero-cost policy” and “supplies more than 100 per cent of the Cosmetic A and B brands”.
Cosmetics B and C are the only two brands on the list of the top 20 most popular beauty brands in the world.
The survey also found that most consumers said they felt “satisfied” with their cosmetics products, but a minority felt they were buying “too much” of the same product.
The results are expected to be published on Tuesday.
